Halloween fair ☆ 2020

Halloween is predominantly cerebrated in the English-speaking countries. Especially in Ireland, the beginning place of Halloween, the last Monday of October is set as a holiday, and the custom of celebrating Halloween remains in the purest way.

In Japan, the Kiddy Land, the famous toy store in Harajuku, Tokyo began to sell Halloween-related products in the 1970s. And the “Hello Halloween Pumpkin Parade in Harajuku”, which the Kiddy Land planned for sales promotion in 1983, is said to be the first Halloween event in Japan, and at that time about 100 participants dressed themselves in Halloween costumes.

It became widely known in Japan because Tokyo Disneyland cerebrated Halloween in 1997 and Universal Studios Japan also held it in 2002.

Single bloom Lisianthus
When it comes to the blooming season of the Balloon flower, I always think of Lady Garasha .

The Balloon flower, which is known as one of the seven flowers of fall, is a very old-fashioned flower with beautiful purple, star-shaped petals. When displayed in a vase, its beauty and splendor far surpass that of other Japanese flowers.

Balloon Flower

Apropos of the Balloon flower, it reminds me of the “Kikyo-mon” Balloon flower family crest. The Balloon flower family crest is widely known as the crest of the Sengoku warlord Akechi Mitsuhide. Also, it is said that the rosary owned by Hosokawa Garasha, the daughter of Mitsuhide who was a Christian, had the crest.

Hosokawa Garasha has a strong image with white lilies such as the Madonna lily, but it also has the image of an elegant Balloon flower from the impression of the rosary and the Hosokawa Balloon flower crest.

The flower language of the Madonna lily is “A clean Heart” and the flower language of the purple Balloon flower is “Graceful”, Garasha may have been a woman with that kind of association.

By the way, among the Lisianthus displayed in the central passage of the OTA market last time, there were some single varieties with less petals.

Compared to general Lisianthus, Cecil has a single bloom, so at first glance, it looks like it lacks volume, but the beauty of the single flower is comparable to the Japanese Balloon flower, which is one of the seven flowers of fall.

                  Cecil Blue                    Cecil Pink

Furthermore, it seems that the shape of the Cecil petals is more like a “Kikyo-mon” than a Balloon flower in Japan.
When it comes to Lisianthus, it has the image of gorgeous Western flowers, but the single bloom varieties including Cecil have an old-fashioned aspect like the Japanese Balloon flower. The greatness of these flowers stands out when displayed in an alcove in a Japanese style room or in a Japanese-style inn.

The single bloom Lisianthus vaguely resembles Lady Garasha’s atmosphere.
On a quiet night when only the sound of an insect resonates, why don’t you try to feel flowers, like Lady Garasha, close to you by layering its graceful appearance with the pure heart of the White lily?

Gentiana from JA Nasuno

Today we would like to offer Gentiana from JA Nasuno in Tochigi-prefecture.

We started to receive their shipment about a week later than the average year, but their Gentiana in this season is splendid. Although there are ten growers of Gentiana in JA Nasuno, we have been receiving only from three of them. Still, the amount of shipment will be increased by the end of this month.

The main variety is “Ruri Otome,” which is originally bred in Tochigi, and with those originally bred in Nasu including “Nasu no Aozora,” and other color types, they have about fifteen varieties planted. We recommend their excellent grade of Gentiana that has 80cm height and five layers of flower buds with vivid color. Please give it a try on this opportunity!

Additionally, in the same JA area, items like Spray Mum, Rose, Astilbe and Veronica are increasingly available so please consider using them too.

Gloriosa “Caprice Rosé” from JA Misato

Today we would like to introduce Gloriosa Lily “Caprice Rosé” from JA Misato in Kochi-city.

This Caprice Rosé means whimsical pink in French, as its color changes gradually from white to pink. It is a unique variety that took over a decade to be bred.

The supply of this variety was very little because of its difficulty in growing like it grows easily too long, but from this year there will be more and stable shipments of this as the number of planted bulbs is increased.

Although the world has got tense by COVID-19, the breeder of this variety, Mr. Nakajima (who once worked for OTA) supplies us with confidence, so please kindly make good use of this special item.
